When you arrive to the rink, you can expect:

  • They will receive a FYHP practice jersey. We recommend you place your last name on the back of the shirt.

  • You will be directed to a locker room where your skater can dress. Many skaters prefer to come mostly dressed and just put their skates on at the rink – it can get a bit crowded at times!

  • The session runs for 50 minutes.

  • Please ensure your skater is wearing all required equipment each time they take the ice, including:

    • HECC approved helmet with face mask, elbow and shin pads, hockey jock or jill, hockey pants, hockey Socks, Hockey gloves, shoulder pads, hockey skates (make sure they’re sharpened!)

There will be five beginner skating sessions each week.  Each skater in the beginner program is allowed to attend two sessions each week.  The fifth day can be used as a make up session or an additional hour of ice for your player.  The fifth day schedule is still being determined.  Schedules are printed and available at the rear entrance of Loring Arena on/around the Beginners Bulletin Board (next to trophy case).  Please check the schedules for the recommended times you should attend.   Beginner skating sessions are typically held every week at the following times:

Friday at 6:50 PM

Saturday @ 11:00 AM

Sunday @ Noon

Monday at 5:50 PM

Please check the published schedule on the bulletin board at the rink for occasional time changes and “Games day” schedules.

We strongly encourage you attend two sessions per week to enable your skater to progress during the season.

Color Groups

After a period of watching and evaluating skaters, they will be placed into four color groups based on their proficiency.  To easily identify a skater with their skill level, colors have been assigned to each level.   The red group is for novice skaters with no or limited skating ability.  From there they move to orange, yellow and green.  Each skater will be provided with a color sticker for their helmet which indicates which group they have been assigned.  Evaluation of skaters is ongoing and we have two coaches assigned with evaluating a skater’s readiness to move to the next level.  There are over 150 skaters in the program so please be patient – every skater will be evaluated during the season.    To assist us in making the evaluation process proceed in a timely and efficient manner, we are asking players attend the following session over the first few weeks of the season:

Saturday, 9/13            11:00 AM         Skaters with Last Name A-L
